PARK SLOPE FASHION: The Shoe of the Summer

We're now well into August, which means we'll soon be bidding a fond farewell to Summer, but before we do, I need to bring your attention to a footwear trend I've been noticing all the hell over the streets of Park Slope. SILVER BIRKENSTOCKS.

On an average weekend, I see these shoes, in this color, on like 4 out of 10 women that walk by me. I honestly can't remember a Park Slope fashon trend that's ever been more in my face than this one. These shoes are E-V-E-R-Y-W-H-E-R-E.

The funny thing is, this shoe really does represent a perfect expression of everything going on in Park Slope. Stick with me for a minute here.

They appear to worn primarily by BREEDERS, so right off the bat you're saying to the world: "hey, I'm a mom! Being a mom is haaard! I need comfortable shoes!" They're also Birkenstocks, which as a brand, seems to connote the liberal, recycling, farm-to-table, Coop joining ethos that's running rampant in the neighborhood: "I have an Obama/Biden sticker on my car! And pay for my nanny's health insurance!" Finally, instead of an ugly brown or a drab olive green, these puppies are silver! So despite the fact that most of the neighborhood is wearing shoes that would be considered by most fashion-forward people as an abomination, the Park Slope mom is attempting to convey the notion that she's not just a Park Slob after all: "Metallics are very hot right now! At least I'm trying!."

In truth, I actually don't think these things are horrible if you're committed to wearing a comfortable shoe...I appreciate the effort, mamz.
