Our Asses Have Been Getting Burglarized a lot lately

My guess is that babies are to blame.

With this early spring weather upon us, I'm willing to bet that many of you have been leaving windows open during the day to get that smell of winter depression out of the curtains. You gotta' be careful when doing this though, because it just might get your ass burglarized.

Park Slope patch recently reported a string of burglaries that involved thieves entering through closed, but unlocked windows located near fire escapes. In one of the cases, $10K worth of jewelry and electronics were yanked from an apartment on President Street between 6th and 7th Avenues. This past weekend, a FiPS reader wrote in and said that detectives have been going door-to-door to warn people of the thefts:

A couple of detectives came to my door yesterday to let me know there have been a rash of burglaries around park slope and on my block (3rd Street) in particular. The bandits are getting roof access (maybe by being buzzed in) cris-crossing roof-tops, going down fire escapes, looking for open windows, entering apartments, grabbing their bounty, then exiting through the front door of the building. I know I for one am extremely guilty of leaving my bedroom window WIDE open because it’s in the back of the building (but not anymore, just in case somebody has designs on robbing me).

So if you have windows near fire escapes, keep them locked while you're not there. And for extra home security, strategically place spiky Christmas ornaments on the floor in front of these windows, and always keep a loose tarantula in your bedroom
