New Gowanus DIY Company Kicks Off With The Building of Dinosaurs!
If there’s one thing we Slopers love, it’s dinosaurs (obviously.) But if there’s a second thing we love (nearly as much as we love dinosaurs), it’s the Do-It-Yourself movement. After all, we’ve all built our own IKEA furniture at one time or another! And though we’ve all been known to have a drink or two at the Clover Club, we’d certainly prefer a fancy cocktail made right in the comfort of our own homes. Heck, I even own Mastering the Arts of French Cooking. I’m practically a DIY chef.
But what about those of you who are good at making things that require a decent amount of work space? In a tiny New York apartment, there’s just not much of a way to do that. I’m guessing that’s exactly what Phillip Crosby has in mind with The Brooklyn Garage, a DIY paradise coming soon to Gowanus.
“The Brooklyn Garage is an urban club dedicated to supporting the resurgence of American craftsmanship,” says Crosby. They plan to do this by educating and supporting the local community. Think of it this way: you attend a woodworking, sewing, or cooking class taught by a local expert in that field. After the class, everyone grabs a beer together. The Brooklyn Garage will wed the experience of learning practical, hands-on skills and the opportunity to socialize with other like minded individuals.
To help get things rolling, the Garage is hosting Handsaw, Hammers, and Dinosaurs!, an interactive event at which two artists will build dinosaur statues out of reclaimed wood. That’s right: DINOSAURS! And if you attend the event, you’ll be encouraged to help with and learn about building them. The completed dinos will be hanging out at Littlefield for about a month, where bids will be taken to purchase 'em. Should you desire a wooden T-Rex to watch over you every night, now’s your chance! All proceeds will go to The Adventure Project.
Handsaw, Hammers, and Dinsosaurs! is going down at Littlefield on July 18th from 7 to 10 PM. $20 admission, and includes free gin cocktails. Tickets can be purchased at Brooklyn Garage DOT COM.
