[My Favorite Park Slope...]: Place to get my hair did
As a dude, I have this thing where I refuse to pay more than $15 for a haircut. It's something I learned form my dad, who would take me and my brother to the barber when we were kids for monthly buzz cuts and lollipops. Dad never paid more than $40 for three haircuts -- and sometimes, that even included a shave. So when looking for a place to get my haircut, price is the #1 factor.
Granted, I've never had one of those expensive haircuts in my life, so I could totally be missing out. But since I'm almost 30 and kind of losing my hair anyway, I just don't need more than a 1" buzzer on the sides and a quick scissor cut.
Which is why I'm such a fan of George's Barber Shop. Tucked at the end of 11th Street right off of 5th Avenue, George's Barber Shop is a genuine, old-school barber shop. A rotating crew of six barbers (all with Eastern European accents) make up the staff. Their classic services range from regular haircuts and shaves to beard trims. And best of all, everything is cheap as all hell. $12 for a regular haircut ($15 with tip!). A total steal.
Getting your haircut at George's Barber Shop is pretty much one of the most pleasent experiences you could have. There's rarely ever a wait (and even when there is, things turn around in 15 minutes). Everyone there is so damn nice (you'll be called "my friend" about 100 times, even if it's your first time there). Oh, and if you want it a little shorter on the sides, or a bit thinner on the top, they'll check with you over and over again to make sure you're happy.
George's Barber Shop is open pretty much all the time (7 days a week -- including holidays -- usually from around 8am - 7pm). Go there, and I'm sure you'll love it. And trust me, I'm not just a client. I'm also the Mayor.
