Lucky Lou's ReOpens as Lucky 7 Cafe & Grill (and Other recent storefront changes in the nabe)

After unexpectedly closing up shop shortly after opening, Lucky Lou's has reopened with a new name, owners and menu. For some reason, the previous ownership partnership dissolved and the place was closed and put up for sale just after opening.

A husband and wife team named Edgar & Sammie bought the joint, called it Lucky 7 Cafe & Grill, and are now cranking out American Western-inspired food. You can check out their menu HERE. I stopped by and ordered a grilled steak salad off of the specials menu. The portion size was great and the price completely reasonable.

Another new eatery that just opened is Bagel Pub at 287 9^th street (next to McDonalds).  Don’t let the pub name fool you – they don’t serve beer.  However, they do have a really big selection of foods beyond bagels, including salads, sandwiches, breakfast fare, burgers and other hot foods such as chicken stew. One review is already up on Yelp and, in part, reads, "I stopped by for lunch and tried the turkey club wrap ($6.75).  The turkey was plentiful, the wrap was fresh and the bacon was crispy.  I haven't tried a bagel yet, but my roommate approved and the staff confirmed that they are in fact water boiled on the premises.  YUM."

There’s a new vintage store called L Train Vintage going into the space on 5^th Ave. and 15^th street that was previously occupied by a Blockbuster. According to the store's website, this joint is is part of a collection of other vintage shops: currently, there are two in the East Village, two in Williamsburg, and one in "East Williamsburg," (ie Bushwick).

 

A new Indian place called AARPAN is about to open on 5^th Avenue, formerly home of Mezcals. That would be Indian with the dot, not feathers.  

Also nearby, on 5th Avenue between 7th and 8th Street, the former Jennifer Convertible Leather store is being gutted and turned into a Premier PC Care.  At first I thought this was a computer repair place, but it's actually a walk-in medical center.   It’s a shame about the timing, because people could have used this place after eating at Mezcals.

Further down 5^th Ave we'll be getting a joint called Pure Bistro, which will be housed in the space that Mexican eatery Calexico once called home. The bistro promises gourmet health food, and they are hiring:

Lastly, 5^th Avenue will soon enjoy some world-class gelataii when Nicoletta Grippo opens the doors of Caramello in the space between Lincoln and Berkeley that was once the Patio Lounge.  Her family has been cranking out award-winning gelato in Vancouver’s Little Italy for 4 generations and they’ll be opening their new Park Slope place in about 3 weeks.   In addition to the sweet treats, they also plan on serving sandwiches, pizzas and other bites, plus coffee from a world-class high tech $20,000 roaster/brewer system.  Time to get caffeinated and sugared up, Park Slope!
