FIPS Nerd Alert: Free Comic Book Day Comes to the Slope
So being a supreme nerd and comic book writer on the side (look here at this shameless plug), I felt it was high time we give props to Park Slope for being the left breast of New York's comic bosom.
We've got the shops, we've got multiple resident creators, and we even host a comic show in November called King Con at the Lyceum. The nerds really run the asylum here and they have plenty of places to get their fix. There are more comic book stores in this area than in any other neighborhood in New York. No joke (I'm sure someone will refute my claim but quickly)!...I'm looking at you Billyburg.
And this Saturday, May 7, is Free Comic Book Day!
So all you Slope nerds can saddle on up to your favorite comic book shop and break yourself a little piece of something something.
If you're new to the scene or don't know where to start: it's so not a prob. Stores usually give out the first in a new series to get a new readership hooked. So even though you're a nerd newbie you'll be on the same page with those more hard core comic types.
Don't know where to go? Then you're blind and haven't been down a major avenue in this hood like, ever.
But just in case you are or you haven't, here's a FIPS guide to comic shopping in the Slope (I will profile each in subsequent posts):
- Bergan Street Comics: (My fave) 470 Bergen Street between 5th & Flatbush Avenues.
- Brooklyn Comics & More: 493 7th Ave between Prospect Ave & Windsor.
- Galaxy Comics and Collectibles: 123 Seventh Avenue between Carroll & President Streets.
- Galaxy Comics II: 429 5th Avenue between 8th and 9th Streets.
These are the major retailers specializing solely in comics and graphic novels. Most local bookstores have comic sections, but nothing compared to the shops above. Of course "the man" over at B&N has a fairly "decent" selection downstairs, but they won't be giving away free comic books this Saturday.
Bergen Street Comics says get out there early and bring the crumb snatchers. Get 'em started young on pimply social awkwardness the joys of comic books.
Also, since I would love this to become a regular feature here at FIPS, if anyone knows a comic creator or event, a new graphic novel or comic to review from a Slope resident or something generally nerderific to profile pass it along my way in the comments below.
