COOL OR NOT COOL: STRAY CATS TO MANAGE OUR RODENT PROBLEM?

Greg and I just got back from a 10-day trip to Israel. And while it was inspiring, educational and Jew-y (in a good way) in the realms of history, politics and religion, I learned something else that was verrrry interesting: there are pretty much no mice or rats in the holy land.

How, you might be wondering? Stray cats, that's how.

Apparently at some point in the 20s or 30's (when the Brits were still in control), they let loose a shitload of feral cats throughout the cities to help deal with a major rodent problem. Now these stray cats are still all the hell all over the place everywhere you look. And the mice and rats all went bye bye. 

Now, as already established, I'm completely obsessed with my dog. I like cats ok, but would never really want one as a pet. And so I gotta say: I found this feral cat idea to be pretty damn intriguing. 

Now I know I'm an asshole, and I know that this would never ever fly here, and that it's too cold, and that it's def not right from an animal cruelty standpoint, but the thought of never having to look at a disgusting, vile, making me throw up a little bit in my mouth right now mouse or rat again is SO FUCKING APPEALING.

And interestingly, out of all of the many stray cats we saw on our trip (in both Jerusalem and Tel Aviv), I only saw one that looked a little mange-y. The rest of them seemed clean-ish, not too skinny, and kind of well adjusted. True there was a garbage strike going on at the time so they were probably all eating like kings, but still. 

Anyway, could you see it? Stray cats roaming all over Brooklyn to keep us all mouse/rat free?
