Cool or Not Cool: Letting Your Kid Run on that Wall Along the Edge of Prospect Park?
This past weekend was totally beautiful, which means that everyone was out and about in the neighborhood. I was one of them, too: shopping, eating, and drinking my way around the slope, just trying to soak up as much sunshine as possible.
My journey to outdoor neighborhood bliss brought me up to Prospect Park on Sunday, where I grabbed a Coolhaus ice cream sandwich with my buddy and did some serious people-watching. There was just one problem: all the benches along Prospect Park West were taken. So we decided to lean up against that triangular divider wall on the edge of the park.
But as we chilled there, I noticed something strange. Every two seconds, some kid walking on top of the divider wall would approach, trying to get around us. Apparently, that wall is not meant for sitting. It's meant for walking and running; a balance beam of sorts for every child adventurer in the 11215.
In the hour my friend and I hung out on the divider, we counted over 75 kids walking or running on that wall. Most of them were between the ages of 4-7, and didn't have any sort of adult helping them along the way (the picture I snapped on the left was the only exception). In some cases, the parent in charge was half a block away.
Now I'm not one of those people who complains about there being too many children here in Park Slope. I actually enjoy kids. But this just seems like a disaster waiting to happen. I can easily see some kid falling and breaking his/her face, which would probably lead to someone bitching on Park Slope Parents about how the accident was someone else's fault. Can't you?
But what the hell do I know -- I don't have kids. What do you guys think? Cool or not cool?
