COOL OR NOT COOL: CATS IN BODEGAS?

IMAGE VIA DOOBYBRAIN

These days, it seems like every Park Slope bodega I go in has a cat strolling about.

Sometimes they greet you before walking in – lying outside the store in a nearby plant or stack of newspapers. Usually you catch ‘em inside when least expected; hiding under shelves or curled up by a window. These felines are laid back and tend to leave you alone, save for a meow here or there. After all, they’re there to chase the mice away.

I'm not sure how I feel about them. On the one hand, I find it vaguely disgusting that some cat out there has been rubbing itself up on my bag of potato chips or licking its anus over by the fresh produce. The smell of cat piss also gets to me. And I’m shocked that The Department of Health isn’t in there every week trying to shut them down (especially when I can’t take my 6-lb Yorkie into La Bagel Delight without getting my head chewed off).

On the other hand, I think about what things might be like without them, and I’m actually thankful bodega cats exist. Even if it means never purchasing non-packaged items from bodegas again.

But what do you think? Cool or not cool?

I agree. I'm okay with Bodega Cats, maybe even favorable. I'd never buy open container food from a bodega even if there were no cats. Just my condoms, beer, and junk food.
