Brooklyn gets a Barre Class, and it doesn’t involve beer.
Move over baby yoga, there’s a new fitness trend hitting Brooklyn. If you feel like the Zumba classes included in your $89/month NYSC gym membership just aren’t cutting it, there’s a new workout craze hitting our borough that’s certain to tighten your waist…and your wallet.
Popular among the Soul Cycling-bun-wearing-SoHo-workout-elite, the Barre Method “integrates the fat burning format of interval training, the muscle shaping technique of isometrics, the elongating principles of dance conditioning, and the science of physical therapy to create a revolutionary new workout that quickly and safely reshapes your entire body.” Basically, it's ballet meets Pilates meets P90X, minus the toe disfiguring point shoes. And yes, the class is just as hardcore as the description.
Now, you, too, can join the ranks of coconut water connoisseurs as some major barre brands set up shop in Brooklyn. Xtend Barre recently made its NYC debut in Brooklyn Heights, while the popular Pure Barre franchise will lay it new roots in Cobble Hill. Class prices at Xtend Barre run at $33 per class, while Pure Barre is still working out their pricing for the Brooklyn outpost. And while they are not solely dedicated to the art of the barre, Ellie Herman Studios in the Slope has begun offering the Barre Brooklyn Class for those looking to take a break from their Pilates mats/contraptions.
See you at the barre, Park Slope! Or, more likely, see you at the bar…. next to the barre…where Bloody Marys will be waiting when you finish being a jacked ballerina.
