Zombie Prom Moves to Gowanus

Last Halloween, over 400 walking dead donned their finest for a night of dancing over at Brooklyn Bowl. They grooved to the tunes of Leslie DiNicola, Lily and the Parlour Tricks, and The Hollows, and those who braved it into the wee hours even got to do a little booty shaking with Big Freedia herself, the first lady of the twerk.

For those that think this sounds like Williamsburg nonsense: Beware! This year, the sixth annual New York Zombie Prom moves to PS’s neck of the woods. The venue is littlefield, the performance and art space over on Degraw between 3rd and 4th.

The 2014 prom theme is Toxic Zombies, inspired by the neighborhood’s romantic backdrop: the noxious Gowanus Canal. What exactly are Toxic Zombies, you ask? “I think they’re people who sort of became zombies after falling in the canal—probably mutants,” reports Nicholas Cotz, Artistic Director of Personal Space Theatrics, the nonprofit theater company responsible for the prom. “But don’t get too wrapped up in the toxic thing,” he adds, “zombies of all varieties are more than welcome.” He goes on to say that historically, many participants have ditched the prom concept altogether and simply “zombified” their favorite Halloween costume. “We’ve had a lot of great Zombie costumes through the years—Zombie Cookie Monster, Zombie Moby Dick, Zombie Old Man from the Movie ‘Up’…people really get creative. But we have plenty of tuxes and gowns too.” Best costumes are crowned King and Queen, so if you still feel the need to validate your high-school self, you’d better get to work.

Though costumes make this prom special, it’s the music that really draws the crowds. The Hollows will return for their fourth year, joined by Sylvana Joyce and the Moment, Corn Mo, and T.R.J.B. (the reassembling members of the recently disbanded Jumbo Brown).

The Zombie Prom will be held on Friday, October 31st at littlefield, 622 Degraw Street, between 3rd and 4th Avenues, Brooklyn. Doors open at 8 PM, first band goes on at 8:30. Tickets $15 in advance, $20 at the door. All proceeds benefit Personal Space Theatrics.
