We'll Never Be Royals, But We Have Some Dropping By the Hood Tonight
Dust off the fine china FIPS'ters. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are dropping by for a spot of tea this evening before going to the Barclays Center to watch the Nets play the Cleveland Cavaliers. Yes, the couple complete with baby bump, but sans their toddler Prince George, actually wanted Brooklyn as a stop on their official visit to New York.
A bigger history nerd than myself (which is a tall order) from the Daily Beast couldn't help but make the connection between the Royal visit to BK and the historic Battle of Brooklyn fought at the start of the American Revolution.
They may not realize they will be sitting where, almost 240 years ago, the Battle of Brooklyn—fought between the American and British armies—raged on just one month after the United States declared its independence from King George III (who, of course, would not stand for it).
I mean he really got a kick out of the irony of the situation, although I think the statute of limitations on irony is 150 years. I won't bore you too much with the history again (since I did do a sorta related post in August) but Washington and his army got their asses handed to them by the Brits basically in around this entire area of Brooklyn. If you've ever been to Old Stone House on Fifth Ave, I'm sure you know all about it, if you haven't you should go, it's some fascinating history, although I'm sure most people aren't holding grudging anymore... and we did win. So there's that.
And don't worry, this British invasion is only lasting one night and we're hoping for no casualties although I'm sure traffic is going to be a royal pain in the ass (harharhar).
Since the Nets are playing the Cavaliers, there will be another royal in the House of Barclay tonight, King James, as in LeBron. James told the Daily News that it was "a huge honor" to play for the royals (not in his city mind you), “You know, the stuff that you read about people like them, only in books growing up. And to hear that they’re coming to town to see me play, they wanted to see me do what I do best, it’s a huge honor.”
Most importantly who wants bets that they'll be sitting next to Queen Bey and Jay-Z tonight? Anybody? Anyone?
