Update: Missing Park Slope Pup Reunited With Owner
Posted by: Kerri | Sunday, November 20, 2011 at 7:35PM
Frankie, a French bulldog that went missing in the Slope on Friday, has been found! He was reunited with his owner Dave, who shared the story of what happened.
I tied Frankie to a gate next to the Radio Shack on 7th avenue for 5 minutes, Friday around 4:30. While I was tying the dog, I remember a woman giving me a disapproving look. When I got out, he was gone.
For the next few hours I searched on foot with friends on bikes and motorcycle. Right after the incident, I called a friend who posted it on Facebook and I also contacted FIDO, a dog advocacy organization in the area.
I made a flyer with the help of a volunteer from Animal Care and Control. Saturday morning, my brother and I biked all around the park where a lot of dogs are out off leash until 9am. Right after that, a witness who saw the Facebook post confirmed seeing Frankie on Friday and speaking with a woman who claimed she found the dog abandoned outside Radio Shack. She said it happened around 4:30, so this was while I was in the store. The description did not match the woman who eyed me disapprovingly when tying up the dog.
As soon as 7th Avenue copy shop opened Saturday morning, we copied the flyer and a team of six of us put them up between 12th and 5th streets and 8th avenue and 6th avenue. As soon as we started posting flyers, we met a second eye-witness who overheard the conversation between the first witness and the woman who took the dog.
About 5pm that night, we were sitting in Two Boots trying to figure out what we should do next. Then we got a call. It was the woman with the dog. She said she felt bad for Frankie. She had to work but she told me where to go to pick him up. She was not difficult to deal with at all. We drove out to Coney Island and picked up the dog from the woman's mom, who was quite friendly. They seemed to be a family of dog lovers and he looked to be in good shape.
I'm very grateful to my friends and family who searched and posted flyers on foot, to Park Slopers for keeping an eye out for him, to 7th Avenue Copy, to F*d in Park Slope, to FIDO for telling 700 dog lovers and to Animal Care Control for helping me with the flyer.
Thank you,
Dave
