Park Slope WTF: Chuck Schumer Rides In the PPW Bike Lane

The Honorable Charles “Chuck” Schumer, United States Senior Senator for the great state of New York, serves as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration, sits on the committees for Judiciary; Finance; and Banking, Housing & Urban Affairs, and apparently likes the bike lane on Prospect Park West.

Paul Steely, Executive Director of Transportation Alternatives, snapped this photo over the weekend and posted it on his blog. Yes, the very bike lane the NY Post speculated Schumer didn’t support (though he’s never taken an official public stance).

But his wife has.

Grand Army Plaza Bike Lane Squashed, A-Holes Responsible

 

In case you were worried about never hearing about bike lanes again, I'm here to deliver news from the Bike Lane Haters Club. These are people who fear that bike lanes may be responsible for the end of days.

First, The Department of Transportation announced that it will not go through with its plan to add a bike lane to the new reconfiguring of Grand Army Plaza. This lane would be an essential connector to the PPW bike lane, which was installed last year without much ado at all (read: heavy sarcasm). The lane would also be a safer and more direct way for bikers to traverse the gauntlet that is Grand Army Plaza. And although the Brooklyn Paper says you can pin the scrap  on all the screaming and shouting Marcia Kramer did for those curmudgeons at Neighbors for Better Bike Lanes, the DOT says not so fast:

Color Me Shocked: PPW Bike Lane Foes Won't Quit

Well FIPSters, the corpse is barely cold on the foiled PPW bike lane suit filed by Neighbors for Better Bike Lanes and Seniors for Safety, yet they've already made another spectacle of themselves. According to the Brooklyn Paper, attorney Jim Walden apparently has tons of pro-bono time on his hand because NBBL and SFS plan to sue the DOT AGAIN if they do not remove the bike lane. And the Brooklyn blogosphere is back on fire with bike lane fever! I guess it was nice to have the weekend off.
