HERE'S PARK SLOPE: Cheeburger Cheeburger Controversh and Spice!

image via Here's Park SlopeOn Monday news broke that the long-vacant corner storefront on Fifth and St. Johns would be an all-natural vitamin and snack store. A clothing store will also be moving into the former Area Kids space, on Seventh between Union and President. And in an epically silly move, someone at Cheeburger Cheeburger illegally decided to stick bright pink menus under the windshield wipers of just about every car in the neighborhood.

Cheeburger's owner apologized the following day. I also noticed a curious crop growing out of the sidewalk on Sterling between Seventh and Flatbush (no, not the one you're thinking of).

On Wednesday it was discovered that Tenko Sushi and Thai, previously Picasso Asian Fusions, has now re-opened as Shinju Sushi on northern Fifth Ave. Someone also apparently tried to kick in Beer Table's front window. Unleashed by Petco also opened, on Seventh near Union.

Thursday brought news that Spice, the Thai restaurant moving into the old Lemongrass Grill space on Seventh, would be opening up on Friday. The exterior of Zito's, the Italian sandwich shop opening further down Seventh, is also coming along nicely.

On Friday Spice did indeed open, and it will certainly give Mango across the street a run for its money. Chip Shop also turned into a crime scene, as a thief broke in and stole the safe. Finally, the eyeglass store that's replacing the Video Forum put up some signage.

HERE'S PARK SLOPE: Thistle Hill Part Deux and Adios Kohzee Cafe

The week got started with some pretty big news: An owner of Thistle Hill Tavern will be opening up a "modern Asian" restaurant on the corner of Seventh and 11th, and the head chef will be none other than Dale Talde, who helmed Buddakan and also appeared on Top Chef (and Top Chef Masters). The new "gourmet falafel" restaurant also opened on Dean Street near Fifth, and is damn good.

HERE'S PARK SLOPE: Sweetwolf's & Bike Racks

On Monday word got around that Sweetwolf's, the intriguing new restaurant coming to Sixth Avenue and 12th Street, is accepting all suggestions for menu items through their Facebook page. If your dish is chosen you get invited to the soft open and get to help tweak the recipe. Also, Chickadee Chick, the chicken-centric restaurant on Seventh, shut down.

On Tuesday I reported that Cobble Grill II opened on the corner of Sixth and 14th, where Balaka, the Indian Restaurant, had been before. Same owner, new strategy, but man, what a depressing space. Food is salads, sandwiches, and burgers.

Wednesday brought news that Grand Army Plaza's food truck festival would be now happening once a month, and some local business owners are pissed that they'll be losing business to the interlopers. I also tracked down some fresh-from-the-coconut coconut water, at the little fruit stand on Fifth and 14th.

On Thursday Mango/Remixed Thai Brasserie, the restaurant on Seventh in the North Slope that shut down last week, magically re-opened. Seventh Avenue is also getting a whole bunch of new bike racks.

On Friday I posted an early review of the new Greek restaurant opening next week on Seventh near Union, along with a full menu, and it was authentic and really impressive. They're in soft open mode for now, and (shh) all the food is free until they open for good. I also took a look at Prime Six's nearly-completed facade, and noticed that a new women's vintage clothing store, Pony, has opened on northern Fifth Avenue.

HERE'S PARK SLOPE: Bicycle Habit Signage & Cupcake Wars

IMAGE VIA PARK SLOPE LENS

On Monday, word got around that the long-in-the-making restaurant on the corner of Sixth and St. Marks has a name, and it sure is a weird one. Bicycle Habitat, on Fifth Ave in the South Slope, also got a massive sign.

Tuesday brought news that Park Heights Stationary, which spent 25 years on Park and Flatbush before closing last year, is going to be replaced by Five Guys Burgers. The response has been decidedly mixed. It's another burger chain, yes, but it's halfway decent and is sure to be a success. Butter Lane Cupcakes also re-opened on Seventh, and on the same day The King of Cupcakes also re-emerged, selling out of the Parkslope Eatery next door. Coincidence? Also, one of the few internet coffeeshops left in the city, Sandy's on 16th Street, closed up shop.

HERE'S PARK SLOPE: Boardwalk Empire & Pizzatown

Monday was a fantastically warm Memorial Day, so the only posts that went up were a profile of the great tattoo parlor/art gallery The End is Near, as well as a few screenshots of The Gate featured on The Food Network the night before.

On Tuesday I noticed that Boardwalk Empire would be filming for the next couple days on Carroll Street. Anyone see any flappers milling about? Pizzatown also re-opened in the North Slope after a month-long renovation, and it's still as satisfying as ever, with a much improved layout.
