Bored to Death: The Movie?!

When television's finest shows are cancelled long before they've jumped the shark (see: Arrested Development, Freaks and Geeks, Party Down), its most loyal fans live through several emotionally draining stages:

1. Denial ("Who announced it? E! News Network? I'll believe that shit when Mitchell Hurwitz says it himself.")

2. Anger ("And yet Two and a Half Men is still on TV?!")

3. Sadness (Weepily crooning Joan Jett's "Bad Reputation").

4. Drinking and reminiscing with friends about the best episodes, and the ones that could have been (see: HERE).

5. Undying hope for a feature-length film ("How can they not make one? I bet every cast member would be on board!")

FiPS Attends Bored to Death Party, Finally Gets that Interview with John Hodgman!

Jason Schwartzman and John Hodgman on Bored to Death

When a show as great as Bored to Death gets cancelled, its fans react in one of two ways: they sit hunched over computers sending out petitions to PLEASE PLEASE keep the show on air, or they gather with their friends, get shitfaced and mourn the downfall of television. Last night, show creator Jonathan Ames and Park Slope's own John Hodgman invited fans of BTD to partake in the latter (I don't actually know if they got shitfaced. I ducked out shortly after arriving so that I could write this before waking up way the hell too early to get on a bus to Boston).

Word spread quickly yesterday that Ames and Hodgman had plans to meet up at The Brooklyn Inn in Boerum Hill around 10PM to celebrate three wonderful seasons of the show. Ames even promised to buy everyone drinks. I arrived around 9:15 and the bar was already packed and stuffy. Once I felt inevitable boob sweat pooling, I hightailed it outside for cooler air (side note: today is the first day of winter. It should not be 55 degrees outside). I made it out onto the sidewalk just as Jonathan Ames arrived. There was a group of around 30-40 people eagerly waiting to get into The Brooklyn Inn, and he addressed them, first by recommending that they start a second party at a nearby bar.

Jonathan Ames Invites Us all To Drink and Mourn the cancellation of Bored To Death

Arrested Development. Freaks and Geeks. Party Down. These are all shows that were taken from us far too soon which, as we all know, can cause uncontrollable tears, fatty food binges and anxiety over rumors of a movie adaptation.

HBO's Bored to Death has just been added to the list of shows unjustly ripped from viewers before even coming close to jumping a shark. BOO, HBO. Boo.

But fear not -- though we mourn the death of BTD, we have an opportunity to celebrate its life. Gothamist reached out to show creator Jonathan Ames upon learning of the cancellation, who then invited them and the rest of Brooklyn out for drinks tonight:

"I invite all fans of Bored to Death to come to the Brooklyn Inn tomorrow night, Wednesday, [Ed note: at 10PM, per Ames' Twitter account] and I'll buy you a drink. John Hodgman will be joining me and perhaps other local New York City actors from the show will be there, and we can all toast Bored to Death and a completely loony and improbable three-year run."

 See you there, Ames.

Bored To Death Brings Superheroes To Bergen Street Comics!

BTD was shooting inside Bergen Street Comics today (whom I love because they often host shows for my magnificently talented illustrator/writer friends that make up Rabid Rabbit). If I were on a show with the devastatingly handsome Ted Danson I'd probably be OK with dressing up like a ketchup and mustard superhero too.
