Park Slope Singles: What Are Your Odds?

Photo via Village Voice

When discussing single life and dating in the grand apple, there’s an oft-cited statistic that women outnumber men. And technically that’s true.

But I’ve also heard the reason for this is the simple fact that women, in general, have a longer life expectancy. Thus the overall population, measured from nursery school to nursing home, will skew slightly to team XX chromosome.

And as a single guy, I’ve never wandered around feeling compelled to sing the Jan and Dean's song, “Two Girls for Every Boy.”

Not that I’d object. In fact I would support legislation for this. Yet my single female friends still lament that the odds are against them. However a recent analysis of census data suggests that among single folks in the most fertile dating years, men are more plentiful in NYC.

According to the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), if you look at never-married singles between the ages of 20 and 34, men outnumber women—742,400 to 729,500. But also of note, it changes by neighborhood. Single ladies in the Upper East Side do, in fact, outnumber men 2 to 1. However in South Brooklyn and in other areas, the ratio is reversed.

Park Slope is kinda' in the middle, leaning towards more single women than men.

Of course, this is simply looking at raw numbers through a specific lens. There are a lot of singles are over 34 (moi). Lots of singles are interested in LGBT relationships,  A portion not looking for anything.  And in terms of meeting people, a lot of singles are burned out/shy/lazy/homely/focused on other things/making cat videos/etc.

And then there’s the simple fact you might hit the town all fresh and sexy, sipping Swedish espresso, but your soulmate is choosing from a number of beers at The Gate.

In general, the hetero odds seem pretty equal.  But for a map of the odds in NY, click here
