MAYBE I WON'T GET HIT/KILLED BY THE SUBWAY AFTER ALL?
Have you guys seen these "Don't be a statistic" posters from the MTA?? I assume these are supposed to be a sobering deterrent for those of you that like to stand just a leetle to close to the tracks while teetering on the edge of fine city's subway platforms.
But for me--someone whose day is constantly marked with a string of inter-connected fantasies regarding the various ways I will likely be killed (fall down an elevator shaft, hit by a cab, pushed out on to the subway tracks by a crazy stranger)--I kind of feel a bit relieved.
I mean, let's break it down:
- 146 people were hit by subway trains in 2011. And 8,244,910 annoying people live in NYC. That's only 0.00177%!
- Out of 146 people that were hit, only 47 were killed!? 32.19%!? So like *most* people who are struck by a subway don't die! Maybe it's not so dangerous after all?
- This means that we all have a 1 in 560,471 chance of getting rammed in the face by a subway car (right? I'm not very good at math). Those are pretty fantastic odds, yo!
I don't know about you, but those posters actually make me WAY THE HELL LESS afraid of getting hit by a subway or standing too close on the platform edge. Like now I want to go dress up as a mime and "walk the tightrope" along the yellow line for funzies.
Just me?
