Hung in Kensington: Police Remove Scarecrow Hanging From Tree
If you are looking for the gold standard in the gaudiest Halloween decorations ever, travel out to the Windsor Knot (I know this because I live there). You'll be hard pressed not to see something inflatable resting near a stoop.
NY1 RECENTLY REPORTED that the nabe went and took it up a notch from gaudesville to straight up racist. Police reportedly took a scarecrow down from a tree that some deemed offensive. Community leaders went so far as to say it depicted a black man being lynched. Personally, after watching the NY1 video clip, I think he looks kinda' whitish green. I mean, he clearly has white hands and khaki cargo pants. I'm just sayin'.
Neighbors say that the scarecrow has been hanging out their for the past six Halloweens, and no one seemed to care before. In fact neighbor, Nicole Clemente has this to say:
I don't think that that portrays lynching. I mean, it's Halloween, that's part of the Halloween spirit. When I see a jack-o-lantern with a scary face on, I don't get scared and think monsters are going to come get me.
City Councilmember Charles Barron said it wasn't funny and wanted it taken down. Apparently the owner of the home was no where to be found and since the tree is city property, they had no right to hang anyone --white, black or paper mache -- from it.
