Double-Dip Caught on Camera At Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket

FIPS reader Uri Rosenrauch was strolling around the weekly Farmer's Market at Grand Army Plaza a few weeks ago, shooting b-roll for a cooking show when he happened on a sample station for a nutella-like product. He tried a bit himself and moved on. Later, when he was watching what he filmed that day, he discovered that a woman who also tried the product committed the ultimate sampling sin (a.k.a. The Costanza) -- she double-dipped!
Mythbusters took on the whole Seinfeld-ian decreee that double-dipping is like "putting your whole mouth in the dip," and determined that, no, it's really not:

By testing bacterial growth in petri dishes using sterilized chips and a salsa-like substance, they found that double-dipping adds just a small amount of bacteria to the salsa, and definitely not as much as sticking your mouth in the bowl.

The truth is that most dips — store-bought or homemade — already contain bacteria. Double-dipping adds only a few more microbes than the multitude swimming in your salsa to begin with.

Still. Gross.
