COOL OR NOT COOL: Vigilante Painting Over Graffiti On Property That Doesn't Belong To You?

image via Kuenaman.tumblr.com

From what I’ ve read, The Park Slope Civic Council’s Spring Civic Sweep (only a slightly harder tongue twister than the “ Bob Loblaw Law Blog”) is pretty uh-mazing.

This past Sunday volunteers picked up after our lazy asses – collecting litter, scraping old flyers from lampposts and mulching tree pits. MULCHING, PEOPLE! You know what I did on Sunday? I sat perched on my couch gorging on an entire tray of lasagna through three seasons of Mr. Belvedere on DVD. So thank God someone in this nabe is keeping it so pristine and Pleasantville-y.

Well, sort of.

According to Gothamist, some young PSSC helpers were a little eager with their Civic Sweep efforts and took to painting over graffiti on buildings down 5th Ave. Which is fine, maybe, if you don’ t use garish, silver paint. And if you actually ask the building owners for permission to take a giant White Out brush to the façade of their property. These kids did neither (after being guided by some adults with very cloudy judgment). According to one neighborhood witness, some of the graffiti being painted over was barely visible to begin with.

Have a peek at some of the damage. Or cleanup, depending on how you look at it:

So the question is: Did PSSC over step their boundaries?

Discuss.
