Cool or Not Cool: Parenting Your Children L-O-U-D-L-Y
So apparently the NYT's City Blog printed a "Complaint Box" post last week in which the author went AWF on loud-mouthed, smug parents:
"We see them everywhere. And if we’re being honest, we have all had the same frightening and ignoble urge to smash their heads in with a brick. I am speaking about those smug and uber-informative moms and dads who do their parenting in public places — aggressively and at the top of their highly educated lungs."
DAYM, Susan Goldberg...smash their heads in with a brick?! And you ppl think I have anger issues?
Anyway, I guess its kind of an interesting discussion. Though personally I think this is more of a NYC issue, and not necessarily just a smug parent issue. I mean yeah: I have zero desire to hear BREEDERS educatiing their bebes, but also I mostly have zero desire to hear any of you say anything (unless I'm bored on the subway and you're a fighting couple...in that case, speak the fuck up).
Anyway.
Goldberg thinks parents are pulling this sort of shit as a way to show off, and prove how "very patient and loving and role model-y they are," and she may very well be right. But I just think, in general, people in NYC are loud, and sometimes self-involved, and sometimes don't give a shit if they are bothering anyone with all of their yammering.
[So maybe a good general rule should be: when in doubt, STFU?]
What do you think?
