[COOL OR NOT COOL]: Luncheon On The L Train?

Picture cred: NY Times

Let me start off by saying I despise the word Luncheon.

This past Sunday the second to last car on the L train received the Cinderella treatment, transforming from its normal pumpkin esque dirty-ass subway ambiance, into a fine dining experience complete with tables, wait staff and a 3 course meal featuring food too fancy for me to even attempt to pronounce and/or spell correctly.

Passengers enjoyed the appetizing aromas of gourmet delicacies wafting through the subway car, a far cry from the all too familiar, ever present smell of homeless person piss that often lingers and stings the nostrils. The chefs prepared an amuse-bouche of fluke crudo with bone marrow mayonnaise and trout roe. Foie gras en brioche, with pots of homemade port-and-raisin jelly (the only two foods I've ever eaten in that sentence are mayo and raisins. Thank god for ctrl C).

The event was collectively created by several NYC supper clubs. The afternoon originated as a pre-arranged event, costing $100 per head. At the end of the meal the funds were returned as some sort of gesture of good-will. Well, isn't that sweet.

So what do you think?

The non-traditional event marketing side of me thinks it was a creative and unique idea, while my Brooklyn attitude screams "get the hell off my train you fucking yuppies." Even though the subway is often mistaken for toilets, beds, concert halls, a place of worship for religious zealots and a soapbox for various advertisers and overzealous rappers/poets, I think the addition of a dining car is taking things a little too far. Regardless, I would love to see that crazy chick that flipped shit on the subway spaghetti eater's reaction to this lovely soiree on the L train.
