Census 2010: The Unbearable Whiteness of Park Slope

Census 2010

Get a load of all that blue!

Also, I never noticed that SW Brooklyn looks like an elephant.

NYC may have edged out LA to take over as the most ethnically diverse city in the country, but you wouldn't know it from Park Slope and brownstone Brooklyn. According to our inFIPStigative analysis of 2010 Census data, we are officially getting more colorless by the hour.

While the city overall saw a 2.8% decline in white residents, in Park Slope whities now account for 66% of the local populace.  Per the mathematical genius that is my 7th grader, that's up 17% since 2000.

Latinos, up citywide by 8% and accounting for 29% of residents, left Park Slope in droves: either because they were going to barf if they had to eat another artisinal burrito or because they were priced out. That's a drop of a whopping 34% since 2000. Their numbers decreased locally from almost of quarter of the population to 16%.

Likewise the local black population dropped by 29%, from 11% to 8% over the last decade. Citywide, blacks decreased by 5% to 23% of the city population. But no worries, all the saggy-assed, hip-hopping white boys are doing their part to keep up the hood's authenticity.

New York’s Asian population jumped 31.8 percent and accounts for 12.6 percent of city residents. Asians in Park Slope increased by 13%, now accounting for 6% of local residents. I would like to think that this meant we get a decent Chinese takeout out of the deal but no such luck.

Also of note, biracial numbers stayed steady at 3% of the local population as did "some other race" (of which we have 300).

The data:

At times like this, a little perspective is supposed to be a good thing. According to a 2005 retrospective in the Real Deal, the eighties era Community Board 6 District Manager referred to the pushy Manhattanites moving in as the "quichefication" of Park Slope. Ha! Good one.

I guess the invaded villagers always think the latest infidels are way worse than they were (I know I do.)

What a few lifelongers are saying now here and here. Sound familiar?

True Park Sloper. This neighborhood always had it going on before the Yuppie invasion. Park Slope was like that great fishing spot that only a few new about but now its just a bunch of groupies and wannabe's that give it that blah flavor. We've lost that Park Slope feel that only the true Park Slope Brooklynites understand.

and

Anonymous. I lived in Park Slope my whole life but i never thought I would say this. Park Slope sucks. The price we all have to pay so that a bunch of yuppies can get high on heroin by the park.

and my favorite

Mel G. I've lived in Park Slope for 31 yrs and it's drastically changed with all these strange white folks moving in the neighborhood thinking they own it.

What do you think? As it ever was or a whole new whiter shade of pale?
