Celebrate your Gay Marriage This Weekend With Marty Markowitz!

New York made history on Friday, June 24th when the marriage equality bill passed and that weekend was one huge celebration. Governor Cuomo signed the bill into law late on Friday evening, and by the time the NYC Gay Pride Parade winded down on Sunday evening, even the straightest people we knew were rawkin' a rainbow flag and a hangover. But newsflash: it takes 30 days for bills to go into effect, which means this Sunday, July 24, it's officially legal for the gays to get hitched in New York State!

Oh heeeeeey, it's time to party all over again!

Of course, anyone who's had to go to the DMV knows that government organizations are usually closed on Sundays. But like TD Bank, New York State now has Sunday hours (albeit just this once), as all five City Clerk's Offices will be open from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM this Sunday to start ringing in the gay marriages.

And damn are there going to be a lot of them! 764 marriage slots are available across NYC alone - which if reached, will blow past the city's record of marriages in one day (that would be 621 marriages on Valentine's Day 2003, if you're interested). The demand was so high, the state held a lottery to decide which of the 2,500+ applicants could get married on Sunday. And with only 112 spots available here in Brooklyn, there's probably a lot of disappointed Brooklynites out there who will have to wait until the week to tie the knot.

But for those lucky few who made it, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz wants to share in the festivities. For all couples heading down to Brooklyn Borough Hall this Sunday, he's providing judges, pastors, and rabbis for the taking. Then, he wants newly married couples to have a free ceremony at Brooklyn Borough Hall, complete with complimentary wedding cake, a couple photo, and a glass of champagne. Oh, and a special certificate from Marty himself. 'Cause I'm sure you're dying for one of those!

Sadly, I'm far off from being able to get gay married on Sunday (step one: find a dude to ask out on a date). But if I was, I would totally have all of my friends and family show up to Brooklyn Borough Hall on bikes. Because, of course, we know how much Marty Markowitz loves bikers!

Anyone out there planning on gettin' hitched Sunday? Will you be having a ceremony in Park Slope? Take to the comments section and let us know the deets (we promise we won't crash). And if you're still planning your nuptials for Sunday, our friends at Brokelyn are keeping track of any avail gay wedding discounts.
