Big Dick in Park Slope

Big Dick in Park Slope from David Livingston on Vimeo.

We get a lot of email here at FIPS HQ, but the one we received today from artist David Livingston alerting us to his onging art project "Big Dick" might just be our favorite.

Here's the premise: Livingston wears a 6 foot long flaccid felt penis (stuffed with sofa upholstery, of course), and walks around various NYC neighborhoods documenting people's reactions. Oh yeah, and in "Big Dick in Park Slope," he's also wearing a doll in a baby bjorn.

If this doesn't already sound like the best idea you've heard since Yogo Monster started selling soft pretzels, there's clearly something wrong with you.

True: the video is kinda long and not *that* much happens, but I do have a couple of fave moments:

5:24: big Dick goes to the Farmer's Market

5:46: big Dick goes to Prospect Park

Also, Livingston was nice enough to send along a few other choice tidbits about the day:

I found the Park Slope parents' reactions to be compelling, because they noticed the Big Dick, and either didn't care or didn't want their children to ask them what it was.

Park Slope was much better behaved than the tourists in Time Square, though. Those tourists were quite taken with the Big Dick.  A middle aged Italian woman picked it up and kissed it while here husband took pictures.  One man said "Asshole!" under his breath while staring intently.   Another man played it like a guitar. Interesting to see just how different Park Slope parents are from midtown tourists...

While it does have some hilarious moments, I view this project as a series of absurdist art pieces. Of course it's amusing - it's a Big Dick in the city, after all - but there was so much more dramatic tension in the Park Slope piece than in the Time Square piece - you can feel how much these parents don't want to touch the topic (literally or figuratively) with their offspring and that's kind of hilarious too.  If you go to Youtube you can see all of the pieces that I did on Wall Street - another great study in avoidance...and big dicks.  My artist website has a bunch of stills, too.
