Abandoned Pet Duck Rescued from Certain Doom in Prospect Park

On Friday, DNAinfo reported that some total douchebag decided they didn't want their pet duck anymore, so they dropped it off in Prospect Park to live out the rest of its days with its own kind. Unfortunately, they might as well have just killed the poor duck with their bare hands. According to Mary Beth Artz, "a wildlife conservation educator who keeps close tabs on the park's critters," domesticated fowl can't fend for themselves in the wild.

Fortunately, Artz, and other people who apparently would be able to tell the difference between the native ducks and the interloper, alerted the authorities that something was amiss. For future reference, pet ducks are white, and wild waterfowl are brown and green. Plus, all the ducks that grew up in Prospect Park were being all clique-y and shit. One of the park workers who understands quack patterns even said he heard one of the wild ducks say, "Get off my pond!"*

Anyhoo, the duck is now happily ensconced in an animal sanctuary. Hopefully, this won't happen again, but park workers say this is part of a "sad trend." People buy baby ducks for Easter, when they're all little and cute and fuzzy, and then abandon them in the park when they grow up. Tsk tsk.

It could be worse. The evil pet owners could be setting the ducks free on the Gowanus.

* Yeah, that part is totally not true
