A New Hotel is Going Up in Downtown Brooklyn

Oh yay, another shitty looking tower will be going up in Downtown Brooklyn! But just this time it won't be luxury apartments, it will be a hotel. So if you're looking for yet another place to have an illicit affair or somewhere to put up your visiting family members sick of your lumpy futon, this could be a dream come true.

On Friday, the New York Post reported that a 200-room hotel is slated to begin construction this fall. It's location at 95 Rockwell Place is intended to service the burgeoning "cultural district" that encompasses BAM and the Barclay Center. And according to Downtown Brooklyn Partnership President Tucker Reed this hotel is : “The arrival of the Barclay's Center coupled with the pipeline of new cultural-district projects in Downtown Brooklyn is driving demand for further hotel development.” Reed went on to deliver the token sound bite every official gives when they announce that another thoughtless tower is going up: "hotel development is jumping across Flatbush Avenue, creating another employment opportunity for the area.”

The hotel will be designed by Thomas Leeser, most recently lauded for his design of the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria and the London 2012 Olympic Park. Amenities will include a banquet hall, rooftop bar a basement performing arts space and a ground-level restaurant.

This is just one of many new developments in the area including another 32 story 300-unit apartment building on Flatbush Avenue, down the street from ANOTHER proposed 600-plus unit apartment building on Fulton Street and Ashland Avenue. Half of those units in that development are allegedly going to be affordable living units (let's see if that actually pans out). On the bright side 50,000 square feet is being put aside for BAM to expand its movie theater and a new branch of the Brooklyn Public Library will be opened.
