Halloween Costume ideas from 5th Ave vintage shops

Need a last minute costume idea? If a sexy Chewbacca isn't cutting it this year, we've rounded up three costumes that you can create from vintage shops along 5th Avenue. These aren't your cookie cutter Devil costumes from the popup Ricky's, which is only in town for a few more days. Sure, they're a little pricier. But it's vintage! And you're totally worth it.

Beware the Invasion: Park Slope Home to Largest Childrens' Halloween Parade

Photo via Daily News

Leave it up to Park Slope to hold the largest children's Halloween parade in the entire country. The event, organized by the Park Slope Civic Council, will go down Monday, 10/31 at 6:30PM. The parade will start at 14th street and 7th Avenue and will end a few hours later at the Old Stone House.

What do you guys think will be the most popular kid costume this year? Can you dress a baby up as a Dave Eggers book?

Spill: Best Trick Or Treat Routes, Candies, Costumes, and Kid-Free Hiding Spots

My husband can't get over Halloween in Park Slope: the embarrassment of riches, the spectacle, the sheer scope of stoop friendliness. He hails from the country where you had to hoof it a mile to get to the next candy bar and, yes, every year he tells us his sorrowful trick-or-treating tale of woe.

We try to listen attentively. Honestly we do.

I, on the other hand, lived in a BIG apartment building in the city for a lot of my childhood and you didn't even have to hit the street to fill your bucket. Of course, if you did head out, chances were good you'd get mugged by marauding twelve-year-olds before you made it home safe with your load.

My, my, how times have changed.

So, here's your chance. Tell us your tales of halloweens past. Where's the best candy at? Btw, my money's on Montgomery Place. I swear, it's a good thing these people have disposable income because I would bet that each house must hand out 30 bags of candy. Why does anybody still hand out candy corns? What are you dressing as this year? Best costume ever? Do you have a pee/parade spot on 3rd St lined up yet? And anything else you want to say...

The Gate's Semi-Accidental Halloween Costume Contest

Apparently, there was a costume contest at the Gate last night. I'll put the emphasis on "apparently," because at 10 p.m., there were about four people there who were dressed up. I think I'm fairly safe to say anyone who participated at about midnight did so accidentally after having straggled in ("Costume contest? Well, I'll stand up--I need to justify why I'm dressed like an ass!"). Being the diligent journalist that I am, I snapped some photos.

Your winners for the evening:

The Man in the Yellow Hat and Curious George(tte). $100 bucks richer. You cannot see the tight yellow pants, but trust me, they were there.

Second placed sucked, so I'm not even going to show you that shit. Third:

The couple from VJ Day in Times Square...dead. ('Cause they are now. 'Sup history!)

An honorable mention:

The trainer from Sea World who got mauled, complete with a bucket of Swedish Fish. (Thanks for feeding my addiction, dude.) Um...won't comment on the "too soon?" question.

And finally, this guy:

Who I think said he was his inner self. I don't know. You judge.

Anyway, that's what you missed from the accidental costume contest at The Gate last night.  Happy Halloween and shit.

Halloween in Park Slope: IT'S ALL ABOUT THE PARADE

So, are you btchz going to the parade on Sunday?

In case you haven't noticed, I could give a rat's ass about Halloween and have ZERO interest in all this bullshit, except:

  • my fat ass loves candy
  • I enjoy dressing up my dog

Soooo, Greg, Ollie and I will probs drag our asses out to the parade, if for no other reason than I bought Ollie a stupid pumpkin costume annnnnd I maybe also wanna take pics of all your bebes in their costumes. Even though I'm convinced everyone is just gonna dress up like a bedbug.

Anyway.

Here's the scoop on the parade from the Park Slope Civic Council's website:

"The main event on Sunday, Oct. 31, is the Annual Park Slope Civic Council Children’s Halloween Parade, the largest such parade in the United States.

The parade kicks off at 6:30. Note that the route this year will begin at Seventh Avenue and 14th Street. The parade continues up Seventh, turns left on Third Street, and ends at the Old Stone House, where the revelry will continue until 9 p.m.

Before the parade, at 4 p.m., is the Park Slope Civic Council Halloween Costume Contest in front of the Secondary School for Law, Journalism, and Research, Seventh Avenue between Fourth and Fifth Streets. Costume categories range from “best theme” to “best classic character” to “best use of materials.” Winners will be given banners to display in the parade. (Registration from 3pm - 4pm)."

Be there or be square.
